About this module

What stress actually looks like from the inside.

Long before a teenager can name what they're feeling, their body has usually already responded to it: a racing heart before a test, a tight chest before a hard conversation, a sudden wave of fatigue after a difficult day. This module gives those sensations a map, walking through what the nervous system is actually doing during stress and why those responses are protective rather than something wrong with them. Understanding the body's stress response as intelligent, rather than inconvenient, is what makes it possible to work with it later rather than being run by it.

What they'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • A working picture of what happens in the nervous system during a stress response, in plain language.
  • How to recognize their own personal early-warning signs that stress is building.
  • Why the body's stress response is a form of protection, not a malfunction.
  • The vocabulary to describe physical stress sensations accurately, rather than only as 'fine' or 'bad.'

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

The nervous system, briefly explained

A clear, age-appropriate look at the body's stress response: what triggers it, what it does, and why it developed this way.

Lane 2 · Practice

A body scan for stress

A short, guided practice for noticing where and how stress shows up physically, before it builds further.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What is my body trying to tell me?

Reflection on a recent stressful moment, read back through the body rather than just the thoughts around it.

Outcome

"I can recognize what's happening in my body under stress, and I understand why it's happening."
