About this module

Values that hold steady when it actually counts.

It's one thing to name a value in a calm moment and another thing entirely to act from it when a real decision is on the line and the easier path runs the other direction. This module returns to the values work from earlier in the program and tests it against pressure, asking a teen to identify not just what they value, but whether that value actually holds when something real is at stake. Making sure their compass actually holds under pressure is what this module is building toward.

What they'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • The difference between a value that's been named and one that's actually been tested.
  • How to recognize the specific moments their own values are most likely to be tested.
  • A way of checking a real decision against a stated value before acting.
  • Practice identifying one past moment a value held, and one it didn't, without judgment attached to either.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why values under pressure differ from values at rest

What's understood about the gap between stated values and values-in-action, and what tends to close that gap over time.

Lane 2 · Practice

A values-under-pressure check

A short practice for testing a real, upcoming decision against a value they've claimed as their own.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Did this value actually hold?

Reflection on a past decision, examined honestly for whether a stated value held up or gave way.

Outcome

"I know which of my values actually hold when something real is at stake, and I can trust them there."
