About this module

Trading the director's chair for the coach's sideline.

A director tells a child exactly what to do and when; a coach prepares a child to make their own calls and then trusts them to make them. This module names that shift directly, helping a parent recognize where they're still directing out of habit or anxiety, and building the specific skill of coaching instead, staying close enough to support without taking over the decision itself.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • The practical difference between directing a child and coaching them.
  • Where in daily life a parent is still directing out of habit, even when coaching would serve better.
  • A few specific coaching questions that hand a decision back to the child instead of making it for them.
  • Practice coaching through one real decision this week instead of directing it.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

What coaching actually develops that directing doesn't

What's understood about how being coached toward a decision builds a child's own decision-making capacity in a way that being directed doesn't.

Lane 2 · Practice

A coaching-questions practice

A short set of real questions that hand a decision back to a child, rather than making it for them.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Am I directing this, or coaching it?

Reflection on a recent moment with a child, examined for whether a decision was actually theirs to make.

Outcome

"I can coach my child through a decision instead of directing it for them."
