About this module

Offering presence instead of answers.

The instincts that make someone a capable parent, noticing, attuning, holding steady, are close to the same instincts that make a good mentor to another parent, but mentoring adds one more discipline: resisting the urge to fix someone else's situation the way a parent might fix their own child's. This module builds the specific skill of mentoring presence, listening and holding space for another parent without taking over their process.

What you'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • The difference between supporting another parent and quietly taking over their process.
  • A few specific ways of holding space for another parent without rushing to fix their situation.
  • Practice offering mentoring presence to one other parent this month.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why presence helps more than solutions, here too

What's understood about how peer mentoring works best when it offers steady presence rather than directive advice.

Lane 2 · Practice

A holding-space practice

A short practice for listening fully to another parent without moving quickly into problem-solving mode.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Am I holding space, or taking over?

Reflection on a recent conversation with another parent, examined for how much space was actually held versus filled.

Outcome

"I can hold space for another parent without needing to fix their situation for them."
