About this module

What a teacher sees in a student is never only the student.

A teacher's perception of a child runs constantly through the filter of their own history, their own assumptions about effort and respect, and their own unexamined narratives about what a 'good student' looks like, and this module makes that filter visible so it can be worked with rather than mistaken for objectivity. Projection is treated here not as a flaw to feel ashamed of but as an ordinary feature of being human, one that becomes far less distorting the moment a teacher learns to notice it in the instant it happens.

What you'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • How projection quietly shapes a teacher's read of a student's behavior.
  • A few of the personal narratives most teachers carry into the room without realizing it.
  • A simple practice for catching a projection in the moment it happens.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

The psychology of projection

What's understood about how unconscious projection shapes perception, and why it shows up especially strongly under classroom stress.

Lane 2 · Practice

A noticing practice

A brief daily practice for catching the moment a reaction to a student says more about the teacher than the student.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Whose story is this, really?

Reflection on a recent strong reaction to a student, examined for which parts belonged to the teacher's own history.

Outcome

"I can catch my own projections before they decide how I treat a student."
