About this module

Authority can come from safety instead of from fear.

A teacher's authority has traditionally been built on the threat of consequence, but there is a sturdier version available, one built on the simple, repeated experience of a student feeling genuinely safe and attuned to in this teacher's presence. This module names that relational authority directly and teaches co-regulation as its core mechanism, the practice of a calm adult nervous system helping a dysregulated young one find its way back to steady.

What you'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • The difference between authority built on fear and authority built on attunement.
  • How co-regulation works as a concrete mechanism, not just a comforting idea.
  • A few specific ways to offer co-regulation to a dysregulated student in real time.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

The mechanics of co-regulation

What's understood about how a calm adult nervous system helps regulate a dysregulated younger one, and why this works better than instruction alone.

Lane 2 · Practice

A co-regulation practice

A short set of concrete ways to offer co-regulation to a student in the moment, without taking over the moment.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Where does my authority actually come from?

Reflection on whether this teacher's current authority leans more on fear or more on attunement, and what they'd like to shift.

Outcome

"My authority with students now comes more from attunement than from fear."
