About this module

Worth and performance are not the same thing, and students can tell when a room confuses them.

Every classroom sends a continuous, often unspoken message about whether a student's worth is tied to their output, and students read that message with remarkable accuracy, adjusting their risk-taking and self-concept accordingly. This module builds an identity-safe classroom in concrete terms, examining the specific language, feedback structures, and classroom norms that either separate worth from performance clearly or quietly fuse the two together.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • How a classroom's language and feedback structures either separate worth from performance or fuse them together.
  • The specific signs that a student has begun to equate their worth with their grades.
  • A few concrete language shifts that keep worth and performance visibly separate.
  • What becomes possible for risk-taking and learning once a room is genuinely identity-safe.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Identity safety and risk-taking

What's understood about how identity-safe environments increase a student's willingness to take academic risks and recover from failure.

Lane 2 · Practice

A feedback-language audit

A short audit of this teacher's own feedback language, checked for places it may quietly fuse worth and performance.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Do my students know their worth doesn't ride on their grade?

Reflection on whether this teacher's classroom currently communicates that separation clearly enough.

Outcome

"My classroom's language now keeps a student's worth clearly separate from their performance."
