About this module

Finding what matters once the praise is set aside.

Praise and approval are powerful, and most teenagers have learned to read a room for them without even noticing they're doing it. This module asks a quieter question underneath that habit: apart from what earns applause, what actually matters to this person? Naming a handful of real, personal values gives a teen something steadier to stand on than the next compliment or the next like, and becomes the inner reference point the rest of this year's work keeps returning to.

What they'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • The difference between doing something because it matters and doing it because it's praised.
  • A short, honest process for identifying three to five values that are genuinely their own.
  • How to notice when a choice is being driven by approval-seeking rather than by what they actually value.
  • A first attempt at using their own values as a reference point for a real decision.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why approval feels so good, neurologically

The reward pathways involved in social praise, and why it takes deliberate practice to value something apart from them.

Lane 2 · Practice

A values sort

A hands-on exercise for narrowing a long list of possible values down to the handful that feel most genuinely theirs.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What would I choose with no one watching?

Reflection on a recent choice, examined for how much of it was values-driven versus praise-driven.

Outcome

"I know a few things that genuinely matter to me, apart from whether they earn anyone's praise."
