About this module

What actually happens when you compare yourself to someone else.

Comparison has always been part of adolescence, but a constant feed of curated, filtered lives has made it nearly continuous for this generation. This module looks directly at how comparison operates, both in person and online, and why it so rarely delivers an honest picture of either the person making the comparison or the person being compared to. Rather than telling a teen to simply stop comparing, it builds the relational awareness to notice the trap while it's happening and choose a steadier way of measuring themselves.

What they'll explore

Five shifts this module is building toward.

  • How comparison operates differently online than it does in person, and why online comparison tends to distort more.
  • The specific moments and platforms most likely to trigger comparison for them personally.
  • A way of noticing a comparison spiral early, before it fully takes hold.
  • An alternative way of measuring their own progress that doesn't depend on anyone else's life.
  • How to respond supportively if comparison is pulling at a friend, not just themselves.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why curated images distort comparison

What's known about social comparison theory, and why a feed of edited highlights makes for an especially unfair comparison.

Lane 2 · Practice

Catching the comparison spiral

A short practice for noticing the physical and emotional signs that a comparison spiral has started.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Measured against what, exactly?

Journaling on a recent comparison, and what a fairer, more personal measure of progress would look like instead.

Outcome

"I can notice when I'm caught in a comparison, and I have a steadier way of measuring myself."
