About this module

Closing the gap between the online self and the real one.

A teenager's online presence is often curated in ways their offline life never quite is, which can leave a quiet gap between who they're presenting on a screen and who they actually are in the room. This module revisits the mask-and-self work from early in the program and applies it specifically to digital life, helping a teen notice where their online self is a reasonable extension of who they are and where it has started to drift into something closer to a performance. The goal is coherence between the two, with both the online and offline self treated as equally real.

What they'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • Where their online presence genuinely reflects them, and where it's started to diverge.
  • What drives the gap between an online self and an offline one, without shame attached to either.
  • A way of checking in with themselves before posting, rather than only after.
  • Practice narrowing the distance between who they are online and who they are everywhere else.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

What curated identity does to self-perception

What's understood about how presenting a curated self online can quietly reshape a person's sense of their actual self.

Lane 2 · Practice

A before-you-post check

A quick practice for pausing before sharing something online and checking it against how they actually feel.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Which self is more fully me?

Reflection comparing a recent online post with how they were actually feeling at the time.

Outcome

"My online self and my real self are close enough that I don't have to keep track of two different people."
