About this module

Finding an opinion that's actually theirs.

Inside a friend group, a classroom, or an online community, it's remarkably easy for a teenager's opinion to quietly become whatever the group around them already believes, long before they've actually examined it for themselves. This module slows that process down, giving a teen a habit of checking a borrowed opinion against their own direct experience and reasoning before adopting it as their own. The aim is to make sure agreement, when it happens, is actually earned, on a topic they've looked at closely enough to call their own.

What they'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • How group opinion can form and spread faster than any one person's actual thinking.
  • A short process for checking whether an opinion is truly theirs or simply borrowed.
  • Practice forming and stating an independent view on a low-stakes topic.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

How group opinion moves faster than individual thought

What's known about social conformity and groupthink, and why even thoughtful people are susceptible to it.

Lane 2 · Practice

An opinion-ownership check

A short practice for testing whether a belief is genuinely held or simply adopted from the group around them.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Would I think this if no one else did?

Journaling on a recent opinion, examined for how much of it is genuinely theirs.

Outcome

"I can tell the difference between what I actually think and what I've simply absorbed from the people around me."
