About this module

Getting oriented to the systems of adult life.

A great deal of what adult life actually requires, filing paperwork, understanding credit, renting an apartment, navigating a workplace, is rarely taught directly, which leaves many young people learning it through costly trial and error. This module offers a direct, practical orientation to a handful of these real-world systems, aimed at removing the sense of total unfamiliarity that makes adulthood feel more intimidating than it needs to. Understanding the basic shape of a system is often enough to navigate it capably.

What they'll explore

Five shifts this module is building toward.

  • A working orientation to a few essential adult systems: basic finances, housing, and workplace norms.
  • Where to find reliable information when one of these systems gets more complicated than this module covers.
  • The difference between not knowing something yet and lacking the capacity to learn it.
  • One real, practical step toward understanding a specific system relevant to them soon.
  • A short list of trusted adults or resources to ask when a real-world system gets confusing.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why unfamiliarity feels like incapability

What's understood about how unfamiliar systems trigger a false sense of incapability, and how direct orientation resolves it.

Lane 2 · Practice

A real-world systems checklist

A practical walkthrough of a few essential systems: basic finances, housing, and workplace expectations.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What do I actually need to learn next?

Reflection identifying the specific real-world system most relevant to their life in the next year.

Outcome

"I have a working orientation to the real-world systems ahead of me, and I know I can learn the rest."
