About this module

Getting curious before getting corrective.

Correction is often the fastest available response to a child's mistake, and it's frequently the least useful one, because it skips past the story the child is actually living inside of. This module builds the habit of curiosity as a first response instead, asking what a child might be seeing, fearing, or trying to accomplish before deciding what, if anything, needs correcting at all.

What you'll explore

Three shifts this module is building toward.

  • Why curiosity, offered before correction, tends to produce more lasting change in a child's behavior.
  • A short set of questions for getting curious about a child's perspective before responding.
  • Practice leading with curiosity in one real moment this week, before deciding whether correction is even needed.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

Why curiosity works better than correction

What's understood about how a curious, nonjudgmental response keeps a child's thinking brain online, where correction alone often doesn't.

Lane 2 · Practice

A curiosity-first practice

A short set of genuinely curious questions to ask before responding to a child's mistake or misbehavior.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

What story is my child actually living in right now?

Reflection on a recent correction, reconsidered through the story the child might have actually been inside of.

Outcome

"I can get curious about my child's experience before I correct their behavior."
