About this module

Seeing the actual child, not the imagined one.

Every parent carries some picture of who their child is or should be, shaped by their own history, hopes, and sometimes fear, and that picture can quietly stand between a parent and the particular, specific child actually in front of them. This module builds the practice of observing a child's actual wiring, their temperament, sensitivities, and natural rhythms, closely enough to parent the real child rather than a projected one.

What you'll explore

Four shifts this module is building toward.

  • How a parent's own expectations and history can quietly obscure the child actually in front of them.
  • A practical way of observing a child's specific temperament and natural rhythms.
  • The difference between the child being parented and the child being imagined.
  • Practice noticing one aspect of this child's actual wiring this week, without judgment attached.

Three lanes of knowing

Understood, practiced, and explored.

Lane 1 · Science

What temperament research actually shows

What's understood about inborn temperament differences between children, and why the same parenting approach can land completely differently depending on the child.

Lane 2 · Practice

A wiring-observation practice

A short exercise for observing a specific child's natural rhythms and sensitivities without immediately trying to change them.

Lane 3 · Meaning-making

Am I parenting this child, or the one I expected?

Reflection on a recent expectation that didn't match this particular child's actual wiring.

Outcome

"I can see and parent the specific child in front of me, not the one I imagined or expected."
